what am I doing wrong? I’m using the drop-down at the top right of the text box, adding the URL and hitting go

It doesn't need to be public.  The key things are:

Copy the Direct Link

Don't paste directly into the body of the thread; use the attachment tool (folded paper icon).  On mobile, you may need to press space to get it to show.

I’m using the direct link, using the folded paper icon, when I paste the link in, I press space and the link disappears and there’s nothing to post

Seems strange it doesn’t work, instructions are quite simple. I’ve tried it on Chrome and iOS, in mobile mode and on the full site, just doesn’t want to work

Ok I’m using safari 
i upload a pic (it’s quite a job to navigate)
I find the pic in my account bit ( very difficult to navigate to ,I tapped like a speech bubble thing )
tap something that says show links 
copy link 
come on here 
go to the folded paper thing 
paste 
press space 

and it’s not worked

I think you might be putting the wrong thing in the box. 

It seems you have to  get the image to display on your iPad  with all those various links down the right hand side then use the direct link one, but instead of using the copy button , use your finger to select the link text & copy to ram on your iPad 

it seems to take quite a while for the image to get to a state that when you click on it you see all those link texts on the right 

The best thing is to have the images you are likely to use ,uploaded in advance as it seems it can take a few minutes for them to show up with all the links on the right hand side 

No can’t get the images to display on my account with the links at the side 
  It’s a shit show of a site

I’ve had some luck amending the imgur link to “I.imgur” and adding “.jpeg” at the end:

Got it ,  on the iPad the top right corner drop down menu is quite unresponsive 
  It seems to default to galleries & it needs to be images . If you can somehow tap on images 
  You get the list of links to the right of whichever picture you select .
