Poopot's Cover Challenge #28 - O - Voting

It's time to vote again. Time to pick our champion so they can select a chosen song that usually nobody likes and only @TTony will cover. But we can celebrate our collective efforts nonetheless

Assuming SoundCloud isn't being glitchy again, you should hopefully be able to listen to all the tracks in the playlist:

https://soundcloud.com/thefretboard/sets/poopots-cover-challenge-28-o

All that is required is to pick your top three and post them in the thread below.

Points are awarded as follows - 5 points for first place, 3 points for second place and 1 point for third place.

There is a bonus 5 points for covering O, Pretty Woman

Entrants obviously aren't allowed to vote for their own track or anything they have guested on. Voting closes at 11.30pm on  Friday 13th September 2024

The entry with the most points gets to pick the next song to be covered. In the event of a tie for first place then all those tied will choose a song.

ALL ENTRANTS PLEASE HAVE YOUR IDEAS READY FOR THE NEXT CHALLENGE. YOU WILL HAVE ONLY 48HRS AFTER VOTING CLOSES TO MESSAGE ME WITH YOUR SONG CHOICE. IF YOU FAIL TO DO SO THEN I'LL END UP CHOOSING IT FOR YOU!

Good luck

... and get the bonus 5pts
D

It's my discipline thing - have a go at something that I'd never usually think about doing.

Oh, and get the 5pts.

[edit]
Though maybe, if someone suggests a song to cover and then doesn't cover it themselves, they lose 5pts.  ;)

Shit I missed the deadline. Congrats to whoever won :)

Oh, and I always consider the choice and will do it if I think I can do anything with it. The selections lately though have all be very .... well I won't be rude, but I don't ever want to listen to them again let alone spend 3 weeks working on it. If the next one is something proggy well maybe ... :)

And here I was considering voting for your entry...

To be fair I didn't do it myself this time, though that was mostly down to lack of time to get it done as my stupid job that was meant to be less stressful than the last one has fucked me about massively over the last 3 months.

But I won't be offering anything proggy if I ever get to choose again :P

You could always make a proggy version of whatever is suggested! A fair chunk of the piano versions of things i do for my wedding gigs happen without ever actually listening to the original songs, for similar reasons to you I guess (i don't want to listen to them)

I started with prog metal in mind for O but couldn't finalise an arrangement I was happy with as trying to replicate Opeth is really difficult. I ended up with a much simpler entry which was conceived and recorded in one day.

I might well return to that project with a different letter if the source material fits

If it's not in 7/4 with a 15/8 bridge, it doesn't count.

Actually i kind of hope whoever wins this one chooses a song i don't know so i can try my "non listening" approach to come up with my cover entry and see how far off the mark i actually end up

Is it possible to download the playlist? I have a LONG flight tonight and this would be great use of time!

I can only count to 4, so its discrimination!

Just count to four, 1.75 times. That'll sort you up to the bridge at least

Did Google image search autocorrect your search to Froggy?

I think I must have "safe searching" switched on.  Pr*ggy is probably one of the words that it deems unsafe.

And back on track after a Sunday morning's re-run through the Os ... the TTony votes go to;

1st place @thecolourbox - One more light.  Not a song that I remember hearing before, so I checked Spotify.  Excellent song, powerful lyrics, brilliantly covered.
2nd place @flying_pie - Only you.  How many times did I check the song title during the intro??  ;)
3rd place @bezzer - Orion.  A monumental effort and would easily win if my votes went on technical proficiency alone.

And if I had any more points to spread around, they'd be going to @idiotwind for a brilliant version of Octopus' Garden and to @fnpt for On the Beach.

My votes go to:

5 points - @Bezzer - There are covers and then there are 9 minute, multi section metal operas. The musicianship on display here is phenomenal, you mad bastard...
3 points - @flying_pie - Would have had first place if it wasn't for Bezzer's entry, an inspired mashup of two classics doing justice to both and your 80s fade out outro solo was *chef's kiss*
1 point - @stickyfiddle - respectable Anthony Kiedis impression and some great vocal harmonies throughout.

I'll go for:

5 points - @flying_pie
3 points - @fnpt
1 point - @mrkb

I've had a listen, excellent work everyone and such a lovely melange of different things again.

I'll vote as per the following:

5 points - @IMC1980 Outside. Didn't know the song but really enjoyed that, some nice variation in your voice throughout.
3 points - @Bezzer Orion. Again don't know the original but it sounded very impressive
1 point - @Flying Pie Only You. I do know both of the donor songs for this and I can't stand either of them so I have to give you a point for somehow making me enjoy it despite that!

Very near points for TTony (Over you) and Idiotwind (One more cup of coffee).

Thank you everybody for submitting stuff for us all to listen to

Good month y'all.

5 points : @IMC1980 - Really beautifully judged vocals, fantastic arrangement and really well arranged.
3 points : @flying_pie - you mad bastard D
1 point  : @stickyfiddle - Really loved the harmonies on this, really made me think of Frusciante (which is a good thing in my mind) and a great version of a surprisingly difficult track.

Might change my mind tomorrow, lots of the tracks really made me smile, some inventive work and some mad, mad, mad shenanigans.

Ok, difficult choice once again but here goes:

1- @IMC1980 Great vocals as usual, very well mixed, nice guitar tones
2- @stickyfiddle Very nice cover, Kiedis vocals are much harder to cover than it appears, as is playing Frusciant's parts and everything else was well balanced and mixed
3- @TTony - Over You: I immediately started to smile once I started to listen, so many great memories from those days. I love later days Roxymusic and you did it justice. I actually considered this one myself.

There are many others I would like to vote for including @mrkb (your vocals keep
improving and the track sounds very good), @idiotwindow (great intricate version of a classic). I didn't vote for @bezzer just because that's not my style at all but appreciate all the work that has gone into this track and the guitar playing is just top notch.

Great job everyone

5 points @Bezzer - bombastic orchestral reimagining of a Metallica classic from the MOP album... Where do you get your ideas? Brilliantly done and I loved it

3 points @IMC1980 - top notch production and playing

1 point @stickyfiddle - a very respectable point seeing as it's a song that I don't like
