Poopot's Cover Challenge #29 - the letter P
Comments
Sent one in
OK ... I got ahead on this one, I felt bad pulling @flying_pie up on their date faux pas so this has been recorded just for him earlier this week on a quiet night. Well for all of you but I'll bet no one else has got Fire and Ice so will know the original.
Things I've learned:
1) There is no point trying for ages to get a really nice nylon string acoustic sound if you then run it through a vinyl sim to age it
2) Shredding on a nylon strung acoustic is really difficult, adds to the Al Di Meola is a a freak argument
3) Programming swing into MIDI drums is really hard
Anyway ... onto the actual selected cover. And yes, I think I'll do it this month.
P.S. The picture is a "Pet Ewe"

Looking forward to having a go at this one, i don't know the original which is exactly what i hoped for, so I shall aim to complete my cover of it without actually listening to the original track before I complete my own (pending me finding some sheet music for the tune)
Sent one in as well.
@Bezzer - (not at all needed) apology accepted and you're in the playlist, mate. As I'm feeling generous today I'll give you 5 bonus points if you also record a perfect cover of Perpetual Burn
@fnpt - you're in the playlist too. I wondered for a second if you'd done the Powderfinger song as you left out the The from the song title but that's a great choice

I mean I will give it go for a giggle, I'm 99.9999% certain my sweep picking isn't anywhere close to good enough though haflying_pie said:@Bezzer - (not at all needed) apology accepted and you're in the playlist, mate. I think it's a safe bet to say that 99.9999% of guitarists could never get anywhere close to playing it - Even getting the intro to 80% of full speed would be a massive achievementBezzer said:I mean I will give it go for a giggle, I'm 99.9999% certain my sweep picking isn't anywhere close to good enough though haflying_pie said:@Bezzer - (not at all needed) apology accepted and you're in the playlist, mate. I found a reputable transcription. I've had a little cry. I've wondered if what I have even constitute as fingers. I've contemplated whether adding numbers instead of dots will help. I can concluded it will not.flying_pie said:I think it's a safe bet to say that 99.9999% of guitarists could never get anywhere close to playing it - Even getting the intro to 80% of full speed would be a massive achievement
Wonder if I can rearrange it into a more tapping based comfort zone or if that will just sound like shit.
This is what you have done to me.

There's one here, but I have no idea whether it's even remotely accurate

Its very close to the one I bought ... which is annoying in it's own way. Its not tab thats the issue ... its that vast sea of notes crammed into about a millionth of a second ha ha. We shall see ... I've got 2 months right?Habanero said:There's one here, but I have no idea whether it's even remotely accuratehttps://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/jason-becker-perpetual-burn-tab-s2897

When I clicked play on the above page I could barely keep up with watching the cursor flying across my screen. On the plus side, there's no words to learn.
Stop the excuses @Bezzer . I've seen a couple of videos of people playing it flawlessly*. Just knuckle down, practice it plenty and build up speed with a metronome.Bezzer said:Its very close to the one I bought ... which is annoying in it's own way. * Let's just ignore the fact they're called Jason Richardson and Jeff Loomis...
I've sent in an entry. It's Purple Rain done as a Gene Clark style Byrds song - think Feel a Whole Lot Better etc. I simplified the chords and moved it down to D - a good Byrds key. The main riff is a bit of a Bells of Rymney rip off (my all time favourite Drop D riff). Quite pleased with my little McGuinn tribute solo, doing his classic trick of working the octave G string. I had to fiddle with the words in the third verse to fit the flow, but I don't think much of them (or the song in general) anyway so no loss there. I did also do a straight country style version as I remember reading Prince say he thought of it as a country song, but that one will probably end up on the outtakes pile as I then I got my new Jazzmaster XII and thought of this version which somewhat replaces it. The original is on a Ricky (though not a 12) so that's why I made that connection.

I cant see the playlist in the first post - where can i find it?flying_pie said:@idiotwind in the playlist
If you can't see it then it means you don't have the appropriate level of security clearance and you'll have to go on 3 separate training courses run by the modsmrkb said:I cant see the playlist in the first post - where can i find it?flying_pie said:@idiotwind in the playlist
or that I haven't posted a link yet. Oops
I've sent in another entry. I looked at what was picking up votes and decided to play to the audience. So here's a country influenced Grateful Dead song from 1974...
It's a straight cover of Pride of Cucamonga, a Phil Lesh song that they never played it live. It was an interesting one to get into and break down. I transcribed the drums first, which helped get the hang of the switch to 6/4 in the chorus and to work out what was going on with the chords at various points. There's also the 12/8 section, and the occasional bar of 2, 3 and 7. It's all easy chords but some confusing changes.
Then the bass line which was challenging but actually reasonably "normal" - as an aside I once looked up tips for playing like Phil Lesh and found one that said "always remember the root of the chord and the One of the bar - these are to be avoided at all times" - but I did cheat and recorded it a few BPM slow and sped it up. I did my best to transcribe the three pedal steel solos and did some editing to soften the attack and try to emulate some volume pedal work. All 3 electric parts are my Tele.
The backing vocals were a cheat. There's an official podcast that has track breakdowns and they included the isolated BVs so I nabbed them and had them as a placeholder that I never replaced.

In a fit of efficiency unheard of for me I've got my next one ready! And it's the chosen song!
Thought I'd do something simpler this time, and in a new style for me and for the song. And as usual it got massively overblown with a million tracks of vocals. This time with backing vocals from the man of the hour himself, Mr @IMC1980
Recorded primarily on my new Sparklebox ... bit of tele ... bit of banjo ... and an attempt to sound like lapsteel. So obviously it's metal as f*** ....
Hope y'all enjoy, y' hear?

I haven’t started.
But I’ve literally got a clear calendar after Thursday this week - nothing planned for the rest of my life (that’s probably another thread)
I’ve a shortlist of about 8. Will give the front runners a go on drums and vocals at the weekend and see where I end up

I've got three on my shortlist - a cheesy one, a slightly out there one which nobody will like, and the chosen song for this round which i hope to cover without listening to it
I’ve started one which is pretty daft. Planning to attempt the vocals tomorrow evening.
I've one almost done - an 80s EDM take on a Slipknot classic
I also have another started - Depeche Mode's Precious as a medley of REM songs
Still loads of time left though as it closes end of November

There's something not quite right about you, you know. And that's coming from me!flying_pie said:

What if I told you that I already have a track for R and it's a Dio song in the style of the above DM song...?Bezzer said:There's something not quite right about you, you know. And that's coming from me!flying_pie said:

Haha. No. I recorded it a few years ago outside of the cover challenge. No chance I'm that organised!Habanero said:Already done the Q round then? =)flying_pie said:What if I told you that I already have a track for R and it's a Dio song in the style of the above DM song...?Bezzer said:There's something not quite right about you, you know. And I've added a cover of my own to the playlist
It's an 80s synth take on Slipknot's Psychosocial
In the spirit of the era I've used a Yamaha DX7 vst for all synth sounds

Sent one in.
It's the song the fictitious Habanero Trio have had most rejected by the bride in our wedding set.
