News just in, has passed aged 89...

Something of a legend, including to the latest generation as a star of the Harry Potter films.

RIP

Will always think of her first as Miss Jean Brodie.  Great performance in a good film of one of my favourite novels. RIP.

Crikey, it shouldn't be a surprise but I thought she might last forever!  RIP

If you think back to those Harry Potter films, the whole
cast, all the way through was very best Britain had to offer. And every moment Dame Maggie was on screen, she completely captivated us and stole the show. I’m not sure anyone else has accomplished anything quite like that.

My own favourite performance is probably with Micheal Cane in California Suite.
Been reading Palin's diaries and Dame Maggie features quite heavily.

Reminds me that I must watch The Missionary. RIP.

Indeed, some of her finest moments...

First saw her in Clash of Titans (1981) where she played a greek goddess.  Then saw her again as mother superior in Sister Act.  Brilliant actress and one of those who you remember in whatever role she played.  She will be missed.  RIP.

Brilliant movie - she was Thetis, mother of sometimes wonderful make-up job, sometimes stop motion villain Calibos...

As you say, memorable wherever she showed up.

Sad news, she was a real national treasure. Strangely enough, the first film that came to mind was A private function, the first I saw her in. It's one of those quirky, small scale films that is quintessentially British, and she was one of her typical characters. Most memorable in the Harry Potter stuff though I guess.

I liked her character on The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel! The Harry Potter stuff was good but too predictable I think.

She was Magnificent
Because she was so wonderful in her later roles many forget how great she was as a young woman ......Miss Jean Brodie

She was brilliant as Helena Bonham-Carter’s stuffy cousin and chaperone in A Room With A View too.

I actually thought she was older, but she usually played characters older - at least in manners - than she actually was, which takes a fair amount of gravitas. A true legend.

RIP :(

This. She managed to make a potentially very hackneyed and stereotypical part into something believable and sympathetic.

RIP to one of the great British actresses of our generation.
