Hurt

Been playing a few acoustic tracks tonight and I stumbled upon this analysis:

https://youtu.be/3d5XENMOQ_w?si=MKLehkINdT64b8PX

I love this rendition ... it's the go-to version for me since visiting the Johnny Cash museum in Nashville but until this eve I had no idea about the subtleties and intricacies of the production  ... perhaps I need to train my ears to listen better :anguished:

Anyone got any suggestions for other beautiful, apparently simple but complex acoustic tracks ... I feel like learning a few more.

Have you heard the original version of Hurt, by NIN?

As much as I love the Johnny Cash version (and I love it) there's something missing with just the Am chord. The original NIN chord if transposed to the same key and adapted for acoustic guitar would be X 0 2 2 4 0 (A add 11 I think) which is so beautifully disturbing in its dissonance

Have you watched the Rick Beato interview with Rick Rubin? This is one of the songs they talk about.

I honestly don't get the fawning over the Cash version. He sounds like Shatner.

The video is the main reason why it gets the adoration. It's a fantastic piece of work, especially with the closing of the piano at the end

I think part of the acclaim for the Cash version is that he knew he was dying and that does add real poignancy to it, speaking as  NIN fan btw.

The original is far and away the best for me, especially live in a packed venue. Spine tingling.

That, and his wife had just died too

I haven't seen the NIN original version yet so will of course view this eve.

I only know the JC version and the associated vid clip. I've had the good fortune to go to Nashville and the JC museum and that's where I felt the power of the lyric and the track.

JC's a hugely important and influential character in music history so I'm not too concerned that he's associated with other artist's work ... I might have a different view later this eve though.

I see it as much like the film Pretty in Pink.

It might be popular - it might even be good, but it completely misses the point of the original song.

I am not sure it does. It's still very bleak and reflective. I think it simply adds another view on it really.
Pretty In Pink - the highlight of that film, musically, for me is the inclusion of New Order's Thieves Like Us - inspired song choice

The same for me, it's not even like it's hard to arrange for acoustic and still keep that interval

Yes, but probably not very Johnny Cash though. It's a different take on the song.
I like both, prefer the original, but still like the JC version too.
