Aquatic Conundrum

I’m not sure where to put this but here goes:
I have a problem since I moved house.
We inherited a pond full of Carp when we moved to our new home. The pump is on 24-7. It seems like it’s been installed properly BUT. When I practice in my studio (spare bedroom -not really a studio- only by name) the pump interferes with my guitar amp. The louder I play the more the whirring electronic pandemonium ensues! It’s definitely the pump to aerate the water. Is there some way of suppressing the noise? Anyone had a similar type of problem with troublesome Aquatic interference and solved it (without getting shot of the lot, lock stock and barrel )It’s doing my noggin in!

Sounds like the volume you're playing at could be off the scales..

You practising Steve Hillage 'Fish Rising' by any chance?
Oh ha ha you lot! :)

I can see where this is heading already:

Is the noise coming through the electrics (in which case moving the pump to a different ring may help) or is it interference "through the air" as EMC/EMI?

If its the latter, then reorienting the pump and/or amp may help. Potentially you could shield the pump as well by building a faraday cage around it (basically a big metal box - wouldn't be too hard to do).

Does it get better or worse when you play "Bridge over Troubled Water" or "Reel around the fountain"?

Dammit - I was going to ask if it's worse with scales or carpeggios. Also, does it affect your tuna, and do you still have issues when playing bass?

At last!
What do you mean coming through the electrics or the air?
The pump is hard wired to the mains.
If I turn the guitar in a certain direction a guitar with humbuckers will reduce the noise a lot as does a noise gate.P90 guitars and single coils are a nightmare!

In response to this, a popular Large Language Model suggests..

"Sounds like you're fishing for answers, but don't fret—just scale back the puns, and we'll fin-ally get to the bass-ics!"

You and I may as well pack up and go home now Sporky :(

Is the pump hard wired into the mains, or does it plug in somewhere?
If it plugged in, you can likely get a mains filter to isolate the noise.

If it’s also coming through the air to your pickups, then the faraday cage mentioned earlier may be a great idea.

You could probably make a rudimentary one out of chicken wire.  Let YouTube be thy guide.

Some troubleshooting ideas:

I assume the problem goes away if you turn off the pump?

Do you have a battery amplifier that you could use? If the problem persists then the noise is probably down to the interference coming though the air, in other words the pump is acting as a radio transmitter and your guitar the receiver.

Can you identify if your amplifier and the pump are on the same ring in the main? In the circuit breaker box there will be different circuits for lights, cooker, upstairs sockets, downstairs sockets etc.. if you turn off the switch for the circuit the pump is on does the amplifier go off? If so can you move the amplifier to a room on a different circuit and see if the problem persists?

A fish tank filter typically has a magnetic impeller to isolate the electrics from the water. So your guitar pickups might be getting magnetic interference, rather than electrical.

Check with your local aquatic supplier, but I think you should be ok to turn the filter off for an hour or so while guitaring.
Change your pickups to Fishmans. They specialise in this kind of thing.

Something fishy going on here…
If the interference is coming via cable could some sort of ferrite filter fix it like you used to put on televisions for radio interference .  Could the interference be induced through the cables via capacitance or something . I can’t remember much about it from about 40 years ago for my ham radio exam.  Ferrite beads and loops wound round cables

I have a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, am an MIET, and used to keep tropical fish. The fundamental problem is your tank pump/filter will generate a magnetic field which will affect your guitar pickups.
How does one reduce such magnetic pandemoniums?

Lead, and plenty of it. (also a EE grad, but my MIET lapsed because the IET are a limp waste of time).

As above, you can probably turn the filter off for an hour or so, unless you’ve got an expensive salt water tank, in which case you’ll have to take up acoustic or play elsewhere.

Yes I too agonise over that membership fee each year.
