New Mandolin Day - Bourgeois M5F

New, and first, Mandolin Day

For the last decade or so have fancied a mando. Finally decided to pull the trigger and to try and avoid immediately getting into a perpetual GAS driven upgrade cycle I went for something a little above what is probably considered entry level.

This thing’s nice, anyway. Incredibly resonant, and sounds great. I really wanted a Ratliff, but they’re impossible to get here and I didn’t want to place a custom order at this point, but this thing is awesome.

Edit to include photos because apparently it doesn't work from iPad...

Please ignore the state of my spare room where I unboxed it - I've been travelling for a couple of weeks so there's shit everywhere in there  :s

Looks great, congratulations on your new mandolin

wise decision getting a good one from the get go, never found a “cheap” mandolin that had anything apart from a rather thin unwoody tone

Thanks - yeh, there seems a fairly significant space in the market between cheap ones and heinously expensive luthier made ones, and only Northfield, Bourgeois, and maybe Collins seem to be available really in the mid-market.

There’s not loads of them around from what I can tell.

Wow! What a stunner. Love natural finished mandolins and it's very unusual on an F5 style. Nice that they've scooped the fretboard extension too as that's something you'd probably end up getting done.

I very much approve of going "all in" even on your first mandolin (as long as nobody goes bankrupt or gets hurt) as it's a classic instrument that'll do you for ever. (Also, you can't kid yourself that you'd sound better if only you'd bought a more expensive one!)

Absolutely beautiful instrument.

What really surprised me was how resonant it is. There was a load of marketing bumf around the wood being torrified and aged, but genuinely it’s far more impressive than I expected.

And yes, the only thing that’ll be making this sound bad is my poor technique lol.
