What next?

I’ve only just realised that Metropolous are taking orders for the Metroplex again. Probably take 12 months to appear, but that doesn’t really matter.

the GAS is strong for an amp that really nails the EVH vibe. I kind of have that already but in different capacities - ‘78 JMP 50w, Marshall YJM (planning to sell), Friedman BE50 Deluxe (same thing) 5153 (well, the modern thing) and a Badcat Hot Cat 45. Also a Cornford Roadhouse (great, great amp and perfect for pub gigs, but more of its own thing).
I also have a Fryette Power Station 2a.

Do I:

1) Go for a Marshall SV20 (£500 ish on eBay), and pump it up with added range, volume, loop and powerful EQ stuff from the Fryette?

2) Spend nigh on a months wages on a Metroplex Mk2 (at least I won’t wonder and I think it will hold its value very well)

3) Something completely different?

Any input and experiences appreciated as ever.

I have no direct experience as I don't really play Ed although his tone is class. I mean, it depends on loads of factors like how much you love that sound and if you will get loads out of Metroplex. I mean GAS is definitely a thing to embrace for me!!

That being said I've never struggled to get a hot rodded Marshall/EVH tone out of a PT15IR, a Runt, and now a PRS HDRX20 (using pedals if necessary). I think the thing with EVH is how you play it mostly and with any Marshall you can get near enough. If you're a massive fan, I can understand buying something close to the real deal though.

You have the later stuff covered anyway!

I’m not even a die hard fan, but as we all know, sometimes the elusive part is the ‘feel’. I had a PT15 IR and it was a killer amp, but didn’t inspire me in the same way that some amps do. It wasn’t silly enough, and quite civilised, although it undoubtedly sounded great.

I thought the HRDX was meant to be a bassier, cleaner circuit? Demos sound great but I’ve not got to play one. Certainly great value.

Head says SV20, slaved via stereo delay and Power Station to second head/poweramp. That would give me cranked plexi-ish at more or less any volume in a stereo configuration with clean modulation. That’s gotta be a winner?

But… it’s not a boutique, waiting-list affair… and that MP does appear to deliver the goods.

Thanks for the response

There's a demo of a rig of 3 tones by Mark Lettieri, he uses it in that video and that sold it to me. It does way more than the clean/bassy thing if you're happy with pedals.

I mean the SV20 rig sounds great based on your description! Could you use the HDRX in the same way, the HDRX has a choke which might make a difference and uses different valves than the Marshalls (5881) which also makes a difference as they aren't biased as cold as the Marshalls, although if you're cranking it that may not matter.
I’ve got a Powerstation + SV20 (and SC20!) and it’s a lot of fun B)
Update:

The overtime gods have been kind - Metroplex MK2 deposit paid. Will likely sell my BE50 Deluxe and some other quality bits.

As much as an SV20 would probably be a killer, the absolute FOMO would probably get to me.

Will update when it eventually arrives.
