So amp modelling question

I know amp modelling and sampling is a thing, what struck me just now is , is it possible to sample a guitar sound straight from a recording and have it modelled in an amp ?
For instance, and as it’s foremost in my mind after Saturdays gig, could I play a recording of Suffragette City into my modellor and have it reproduce the sound exactly the same ?

You can get some way towards it, but it won’t be an exact match. First off you’d need to get hold of an isolated guitar track, without post processing. A couple of years ago I made an IR which transforms my Tele neck pickup into an acoustic guitar sound. I had to go through a large number of acoustic guitar recordings until I found one which didn’t have too much added Chorus and Reverb.

The second problem is that the result is a static capture, averaged over a couple of seconds. It will give you a snapshot of the guitar EQ, but the sound won’t develop over time in the same the way that a held note can do. With a song as raucous as Suffragette City that might not be a problem, but with other songs it might be. In the acoustic guitar example above I use multi-band compression to try to simulate the differences in attack and sustain between acoustic and electric guitars.

I suggest modelling isnt sampling really - profiling kind of is, but modelling isnt.

That said - theoretically you could model guitars BUT... you have to trigger than model - with a guitar, and what you put in will affect what you get out so ????  Not sure in practice it would be any real use.
