Les Paul Studio - Initial thoughts

I picked up a lovely Tangerine Burst LP Studio the other day (2019MY). It was from the estate of a collector and hadn't been played. It's really just so that I still have a Gibson to play once my '75 Pro Deluxe moves within the family. I liked it because the start of the new 2019 run had neck binding and proper cases, which were dropped quite quickly thereafter. Nice as it is, there are a couple of issues with it.

Firstly, the thread on the selector switch is impossibly short and I can't get the poker chip on. I think that I'll have to look at a bit of routing in the cavity.

Secondly, the lower strap button has been drilled out to a larger diameter than the hole for the top button. The larger screw they use sits proud of standard a Schaller strap button making it unusable. Most screws with smaller heads are too thin for the hole that they've drilled. I watched a Gibson assembly video of a guy fitting this button and the drill looked way over-sized for what's required. I'm not sure that I want to start sticking toothpicks in there so will probably just leave it.

Otherwise, the quality is first class. The board was a bit dry but came up nicely with some nourishment. The factory set up was pretty good with only the G string requiring intonation. The 490R and 498T pickups are quite good. They maybe lack a bit of soul but easily dialled out with an EQ pedal.

You want one of these, I think:

Lovely colour and that neck binding makes it a step up.

Glad it's going to get played now.
