Downward spiral (edit - justified outrage)

I’ve noticed this forum becoming much more volatile lately.

Edit - a few members cleared up why this particular issue struck a chord- I fully get it and this was a case of someone abusing the mutual trust shared on this forum.

Although I fully understand the sentiment; the venom displayed after a recent member announced they would be leaving thefretboard was pretty sad. I know people can be twats (the OP in that case), but why the urge to pile on afterwards?

I get members did their “research” to find him guilty of bedroom dealing, or whatever. But man was it a bummer to read that thread. Might as well be on Reddit.

I notice the volatility more in the Politics Economics section, and that seems to be relatively quiet at the moment because we're all dealing with the realisation that the world is utterly fucked....

I didn't really read the thread you mentioned beyond the first couple of pages.  It didn't seem that bad, but I may have missed something.

I fully get that 100%, and I’m not saying that one thread is the reason I posted this. He deserved it.  But maybe not a thread that was 3, then 7, then 9 pages long ,each time I checked.

Feels like the internet.

I certainly don't think it represented a downward spiral.  What were people supposed to do - hold up their hands and go "guilty as charged guv - we're sorry we didn't buy your mildly over-priced gear and of course you were perfectly entitled not to admit you are a dealer.  Please stay - we'll be bereft without your non-existent presence (except in classifieds)"

Same, but then it would have been music related content in off topic, which is frowned upon

I don't think that you can read one thread, draw your conclusion and then extrapolate it to cover the entire site?
Having re-read the thread you refer to, I found it mostly good natured joshing, piss taking & a lot of riffing on themes & running gags. Very little aggression or venom. You can disagree with me & that's fine, but I don't agree with your thought process in this instance.

Was the first time I’d seen the phrase ‘an a-flounce-meant’ and to be fair, it was worth it just for that.

Yeah that’s it. Maybe I’ve just managed to avoid this kind of sentiment - I am relatively new compared to most other members.

Just saying it’s starting to feel more “online” than has done in the past. Definitely not made that conclusion based on a single thread, it was just the basis to make the point.

Feel like you’ve summed it up well however, cheers

Nope, people shouldn’t have said that in response - I agree. Just pointing out the extent to which it went.

Imagine writing that at a low point, then logging in to read what came afterwards.

Feel bad for the guy
Pfft.

Some needed to post some NIN so it may as well be me.

Was it really a low point though?  He just hadn't had any takers for his (extremely niche-appeal) guitars.

If it happened to coincide with a time when his nan had died or his kids were going hungry, then he's got my sympathy, but based on what he wrote he was just massively overreacting to... nothing, basically.

@ryanverbena - I wasn't criticising your post in any way, just offering a different perspective  ;)
No offense taken @Offset  and appreciate that, I’m most certainly taking a snowflake angle to it - emotions running high over the festive season maybe.

We're metric now.
Thanks to @digitalscream for the PM to clear up the actual happenings from the thread I was posting about - I’d not realised the extent of the malfeasance through the witty words of those to follow.

I’ll change the title of the thread to reflect this, genuinely feel better about the whole thing. What a snowflake I feel, and only my second week into my forties

Nah, you definitely come across as a decent thoughtful person.
I have been described as a fucking woke snowflake before, but not here, in real life by a little englander racist.
I previously knew him casually through dog walking as a rambling gobby 'local character' until the recent UK riots, when the reality burst out.
Scary stuff, but now he & I know where we stand & observe a kind of studied neutrality when we accidentally meet.
Don't stop saying what you feel, that's all we all do here & it's how we learn (hopefully...).

Not to derail, but @Philly_Q has nailed it in one eloquent sentence.

It's the facelessness of the Internet. People who ordinarily wouldn't say boo to the proverbial goose can become clannish, mean-spirited, and aggressive. I've noticed this tendency in two forums where the mods are inclined to give members a relatively free hand in how they speak to each other: this place and the Gear Page. Forums that apply a stricter code of conduct in terms of 'niceness,' like the Acoustic Guitar Forum and the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum, do not have the same problem. However, these can be stifling in their zeal to remove all controversy. It's all a question of balances and priorities, I guess.

I think the internet is still relatively uncharted territory in terms of human behavior, though. A person we meet in real life may be very different when they are alone and facelessly communicating with people across a computer screen. In the thread you mentioned, certain people clearly enjoyed the sensation of being part of a group that was kicking one person who was down. Middle-aged and elderly men behaving like obnoxious kids in a schoolyard. So it goes.
