Epiphone 335 Dave Grohl..........disappointing

Fancied one ......played one today .....didn't bother more than a few noodles and a couple of chords
Found it very disappointing  .
Was I expecting a Custom Shop Trinni Lopez that happens to be blue ?......No , I was expecting that it would be a quality feeling instrument at £1275 or more importantly the equivalent of what a good Squire or Mex Fender feels like compared to a USA Fender which in my experience of recent years has been extremely good .Some of the Indonesian Fenders/Squiers have been superb .
It felt clumpy and the neck was strangely fat and wide ( I have chunky Nocasters and Krautster so I like a big neck ) but not balanced or smooth.....the action was horrific ,the frets were really nasty and sharp from top to bottom and the finish on the diamond cut-outs was very poor.and the fretboard was just nasty to the touch.........it just felt cheap and toy-like .
Shame.

That’s a shame as they look lovely, but it doesn’t surprise me.

A friend had a JB epiphone 355. It didn’t feel high end, but it was bloody great and sounded amazing. I tried a few others and they didn’t come close. Guessed they were hit and miss.

I still don’t think Epiphone have got their QC in order.

Epiphone are very capable of making a good guitar, it’s just 40% of the ones I’ve picked up lately have been pants.

I'm not surprised either.  You can get something 100% better than an Epiphone for £1275.

£1k+ for an Epiphone is an ask.
Friend got one for a Foos thing he does. Hate to say it but I wasn't massively impressed either. Neck extremely fat and wide which I found unpleasant.

He actually sent two back before agreeing on one - one had a couple visible marks and the second one's nut came loose in shipping. I think he may have been slightly pickier than me, but agree that at £1300 you should be getting a functional well set-up instrument without any obvious blems.

Picked up some of the higher end Les Pauls. Both the feel and QC were that of a guitar less than half the price at best.

That's two mentions of the neck being uncomfortably fat and wide.  Given that it's a signature guitar, do we know if the fat and wide neck is actually modelled on Dave Grohl's preferences or on his favourite guitars, or has Epiphone just made a guess and created an abomination?

Unfortunately attention to detail costs as things like fret levelling and dressing take time. This is common on a lot of offshore built instruments. Many of these guitars ship with a higher action so the fretwork ( high or low frets ) is not immediately apparent however these things can be done but at extra cost ! This really should not bee necessary on an instrument at this price. The thing is there are many other companies out there with better QC so it would be better
to look elsewhere. This brings me to The PRS haters many people just don't like them but they can turn out a really
well built playable guitar with no fret issues for under £500 ! PRS just tries harder and Epiphone and other companies
are just trading in on a signature guitar and bigger profit margins ! We are to blame there are many other instruments
available to us but we are caught up in the original brands. I have some of the big name guitars but my most reliable
guitars are PRS,Suhr,Hamer USA.

PRS SEs absolutely wipe the floor with Epiphone! I've rarely heard a bad thing.

I think £1k is still overpriced for the DG.
You can get these with a PLEK setup for the same price Andertons is selling those Epiphones:

Pretty sure I watched an interview with him where he said his original Trini Lopez has a massive neck
I've tried one, albeit not plugged in. It's a nice colour, but the neck feels cumbersome and unrefined, and I like chunky necks!

Ive only had three Epiphones the good one was a 2000 Korean Casino which I still own The other two were more recent and needed more work on them than I was prepared to do so sold them on.

I tried an Epi DG335 and a Shinichi Ubukata recently. The shinichi was a nicer guitar but neither of them was as nice as my 2nd hand IBG ES-335 + a pro setup

I like chunky necks too .......Nocasters etc ,but this was just coarse and clumpy ......just awkward and make-do

I tried a Shinichi recently - I have to say it was miles ahead of the other Epiphones on the day (Casinos and other semis to compare). No DG to compare with though.

Apart from a Casino I quite liked, every Epiphone neck I’ve encountered generally felt cumbersome & non-inspiring. I just thought that was their thing.

Maybe the Epiphone is less a signature model and more an allegory? Your high expectations of the guitar were based on the hairy chap’s ’nice guy of rock’ persona; the fret job and neck may actually represent him having a child outside his marriage.
Ive tried 2 of them and they were terrible quality compared to my anniversary sheraton and  Shinichi Ubukata. In fact, Dave even uses a Shinichi Ubukata quite often.

Vintage do a "version" similar colour, same cutouts, same ugly headstock for 500 quid, get that and a decent setup (although my LP copy was great as it arrived). You could upgrade all kinds of things (if you wanted to) and still be well under 1250

I have tried the original Gibson DG335 and the neck was very chunky and flat, now the Epiphone version neck is not the same, it is odd and uncomfortable (I have to say that chunky necks are not my thing but I can handle them) also the one I tried had quality issues, the action was super high, the nut was cut awfully, just not a great guitar.

I tried a random Chinese brand, I think it was East Coast? 335 That played better and was like £300 so makes you wonder.

I guess they rushed the models because of the demand?
