My gut reaction, without watching the video, is not to trust the judgement of a man who looks like a minor supporting character from a Laurel & Hardy film.

The Beeb did a poll-of-polls thing.

Puts Charli XCX on top, which isn't a terrible mental picture as it goes.

I wouldn’t take this poll very seriously and even less so if the BBC are involved.

Reads like a list of what I call "the trendy genre".  Something about them that makes them sound the same even though technically they don't.

All quantized / snapped to a grid in Protools.

Chart music doesn't ebb and flow anymore like a live band does. That's fine for a nightclub dancefloor but I like musicians feeding off each other.

Live albums FTW!

Well that is niche... like a musical Dantes inferno?

The Charli XCX album is a fantastic record that has redefined pop. Some sleepers (on here) from that list include MJ Lenderman & Cindy Lee.

Don’t think Lenderman is a sleeper? But nonetheless surprised to see Cindy Lee & Waxahatchee on the list. The former being a sprawling confusion of something I just don’t get, and the latter being my favourite release of 2024.

All of the MJ Lenderman posts on here were done by me, and I don't think any of them got a single response    He did play on one of the Waxahatchee tracks, and is also a member of the band Wednesday.

Oh that’s weird, I thought country-adjacent music was fairly well liked on this forum as loads of people seemed into Sturgill Simpson

Lenderman is more from the Neil Young school of country, but he does have a good understanding of traditional American music. He comes from Asheville in North Carolina which is around a 4 hour drive from Nashville, so that would explain a lot of it.

The trouble with a video like that is it's too long. I'm a 'just give me the list' sort of person.

I downloaded his album on the basis of a review but it didn’t grab me, I’ll revisit it. Unless you have a recommendation for a better starting point?

Not heard of much on that list, but I'm enjoying checking it out. Favourite so far (only done 50-45) is Grande Mahogany

I may be wired differently as I always try to understand music that initially doesn't make much sense to me, and I have found some of my favourite albums this way. Brat was a hard slog, but it's probably now my favourite album of the year. With regards to Lenderman his band Wednesday was the gateway, and then I started listening to some of his live album stuff. As an aside, I greatly admire the poster who went all in on The Last Dinner Party. I've tried really hard but I'm not quite there yet, however I will keep going
Some albums I'd have placed highly on the list -
Pregoblin - Pregoblin II
Johnny Blue Skies - Passage Du Desir
Father John Misty - Mahashmashana
