NAD: Matchless Laurel Canyon 40
Comments
Amazing!
I used to have a couple of Matchless but stupidly sold them.
I acquired an Avalon a few months back but it's got me wanting a 'proper' one again.
Congrats, these look and sound amazing.

That looks sick.
I guess this didn't come from the UK dealer?
Is Brilliance basically Presence?

I'd love a matchless. Specifically an SC30.
What is different with the laurel canyon? What is its base sound?

The 40w version doesn’t seem to be on this page: https://www.matchlessamplifiers.com/laurel-canyon
Im guessing it has.a pair of 6L6s instead?

No, I got it direct from Matchless.octatonic said:That looks sick.

Brilliance is indeed Presence - or at least the effect is much the same. I'm assuming it's a post-power stage brightness control, as it does much more with the Master right up.
The HC30 (or DC30 or SC30) is my favourite amp of all-time, and it's still the amp I'd recommend first for anyone looking for a Matchless, but this is right up there.jackio said:I'd love a matchless. Specifically an SC30.

It's a 6V6 amp, and I know he was aiming for late 60s Stones Neil Young etc, so it's more in the Fender camp than their usual Vox or Marshall thing. However, all Matchless amps sound like Matchless amps, in that they are big and bold and very 3D and like to be opened up LOUD.
With a Gretsch White Falcon plugged in the clean / semi-clean sounds are every bit as lush and rich as I'd anticipated. What WAS a surprise was the absolute, nailed-on Malcolm Young sound that emerged with the volume up around 2 o'clock.

Whereabouts are you @jackio ? I’ve got a Laurel canyon and a lightning and you are welcome to bring the Falcon round and try them out (I’m in Dorset)

Delighted for you Stu; mighty amps, in any guise.
Youve got good ears too, so it’s praise indeed if you rate them.

I really gotta get my ears & fingers on a matchless or 3 one of these days.
One of the most satisfying guitar sounds I’ve ever heard was Neville Martin playing an ES-335 through a Matchless SC30. A mainly clean tone but very warm and lush. Just a little delay added. Sublime.
Here's my HC30 with it. Can't wait to blend these two!
Clubman is just out of the picture on the left.

That is a very generous offer and I would love to take you up on it. I'm Nottingham way though so I suspect I'll not get there. My Dad lives near Tiverton though....DrCornelius said:Whereabouts are you @jackio ? I've just finished deafening myself with the Helix Matchless DC30 amp. Its a really special sound modelled so I can only imagine how matchless sound in the flesh
We are sort of on the way to Tiverton so the offer is there - will be nice to hear a decent player through them !jackio said:That is a very generous offer and I would love to take you up on it. Ha well...I'll certainly try in the New Year. Again, thank you.
I've really liked all the online demos I've heard of the 20w version, and was all set to order that, but Phil Jameson strongly recommended I go for the 40w one.
And it's absolutely glorious. Haven't had time to put it properly through its paces yet, but even after just an hour or so I can tell it'll be a favourite amp in here for years to come. Decent master volume too, although I never use them in the studio.
Thoroughly recommended. It's also a rather fetching shade of purple
