Simple Minds Documentary on iPlayer

Watched this last night.
Very interesting, and even as a long-term fan there was lots of stuff in here that was new to me.

If you’re put off Simple Minds by the blustery, pompous stadium era, I would urge you to check out their albums Empires And Dance and Sons And Fascination/ Sister Feelings Call - much more rhythmically driven, lyrics are mostly impenetrable (but at least not trite like the ‘let there be love’ stuff they came out with much later) and far more interesting as a band than they later became.

I’ll have to check this out when I get a quiet moment here.

Just to note, this is my favourite performance of theirs -

Listen to it with a decent sound system or proper headphones so that you can appreciate Derek Forbes, superb performance.

Thanks for sharing! Derek Forbes is such a great, unique bass player!
When I first got into Simple Minds, I had no idea what a bass player even was, much less what their role in a band was. Looking back now, I can see what a huge part of their musical style the bass formed.

I haven’t watched it yet, although it’s on my list. I think their peak was New Gold Dream, but I do actually like some of the later albums too, at least up to Street Fighting Years.

Derek Forbes is also responsible for the greatest bassline ever recorded…

Waterfront :).

(OK, there’s a second bass part on fretless, but the main line is just that one note.)

There was one of his old Guild basses in the shop I worked for in Glasgow - it sounded exactly like it, even though he actually used a Precision Elite.
My first ever gig was Simple Minds at the old Hammersmith Odeon . New Gold Dream era - brilliant night.

Will be watching this later - thanks for posting

My first ever gig was the same tour but at Wembley Stadium. Gun were also on the bill; someone amused themselves by booking Gun and The Silencers on the same bill! :)

Watching it now. Never a massive fan but enjoying it. Thanks for posting
Just watched this and enjoyed the nostalgia trip.  I've just been digging through my old LPs and found every album up to Sparkle in the Rain. I can still remember the disappointment when Don't You Forget About Me came out, though, and I don't have a single Simple Minds record from after Sparjkle in the Rain.

Still a great band.

Yes, it seemed like a huge sell-out to me too. I hoped it would be a one-off for the film, and that they would go back to what they were doing before, but it was the start of a complete change of sound and style. I didn’t stop liking them, but I no longer thought of them as cool and distinctively Glaswegian.

James Dean Bradfield of the Manics is a massive early Simple Minds fan and always talks about Empires and Dance. So much so that when he met Jim Kerr in the mid 90s and completely fanboyed and told him it was one of his most influential albums, Kerr thought he was taking the piss.
