Velcro sweat bands?

Hi. I watch bass players on youtube to try and learn new things but sometimes I am distracted. What are those little Velcro sweat bands some players are wrapping round the nut, or wrapping the headstock bare strings, or even at the bridge?

I feel like I should have some too but would like to be able to explain why if asked.

Headstock ones - They are slid onto the neck to stop open strings sounding when tapping

Bridge ones, to dull the attack of the note like putting foam under the strings at the bridge. Gives the attack more of a double bass sound.

Hi , they are fretwraps, they cut out the overtones of the open strings and basically mute them a bit, I use them and like them but some people will always say otherwise, I’ve never seen one used at the bridge, that was probably an alternative to foam for that muted sound kinda Motown vibe, I love the foam at the bridge especially on my precisions with flats

Sadly, this was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title - or more accurately... did John Illsley wear them as well?

I got one in slime green with a Charvel San dimas hardtail in the same color . I kept it as it’s my fave guitar colour . I’m currently learning tapping & not using one . I’m getting better at ascending the strings with no noise , descending is always easier . What’s causing me grief now is noise from my right hand when I have to move along a string laterally

Answer: yes, but just on his wrists :).

Those clothes are nearly worse than the sweatbands! Illsley looks like he's come straight from recording an early episode of Seinfeld...

Oh I like the sponge trick. All that specially chosen wood for tone and sustain, then stick some sponge in to finish it off :)

I probably won't know if I've got a problem until I get an amp? Seems ok with headphones but now I have a solution. Thanks for that.
