Surely at some point they must start to actually expect it?

Ffs. I guess it was overdue because they hadn’t had a mass shooting since yesterday and the four on Saturday

In the American mindset, the odd school/mass shooting is a fair price to pay for the right to own guns.
That's just an unreal quote, isn't it? I mean, why not just pray for this not to happen? In fact, why do we even "have to" pray for this not to happen? It's like the more atrocity, the more prayer. Depressing.
Well they do expect it because they have drills, secure rooms, emergency toilets, etc. My kids didn't have to practice where to hide if someone came into class with a gun.
I don't know how the USA ever gets back from this because there are so many guns in circulation let alone no political will to address it on the horizon. At the election Kamala Harris was explaining that she had a gun and had used it on an intruder. American politicians gotta love God and Guns.

Obviously there are more and more shootings because the vaccine has made people crazy. Or something.
It is sickening and twisted that they are an everyday life, normalised event in America.
Every time it happens, they go through motion and do nothing about it. It has become a daily routine and social normals in America.

Kamala Harris did not say that she had used a gun on an intruder, but that she would.EricTheWeary said:Well they do expect it because they have drills, secure rooms, emergency toilets, etc. My kids didn't have to practice where to hide if someone came into class with a gun.

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has spoken of her willingness to use her gun if an intruder entered her home.
"If somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot," she said in a jokey exchange during a livestreamed event in Michigan with host Oprah Winfrey on Thursday.

Also not reallly comparible. I'm fine with shooting an intruder, shooting kids in school is a tad different.
That list on Wikipedia is one of the most depressing things I've ever seen. They need one of those "X Day's since last mass shooting" signs at the borders!

I'm not suggesting that Kamala Harris would want to shoot school children, simply that gun culture is so ubiquitous that mainstream politicians feel the need to show that they are part of it or risk alienating voters. Without that gun culture and availability things like school shootings wouldn't happen but there's not a lot of will to show that relationship.S56035 said:Also not reallly comparible. Should we start that rumour and see how long it takes Trump to repeat it????EricTheWeary said:I'm not suggesting that Kamala Harris would want to shoot school children, simply that gun culture is so ubiquitous that mainstream politicians feel the need to show that they are part of it or risk alienating voters. Can’t see the quoted on the BBC site, nevertheless astounding! In disbelief people don’t necessarily say the most logical things, but that is trite nonsense and plain self-parody, in a country where mass-shootings are nearly as common as the daily rags in which they’re reported.
They aren't coming back from this - not in the next 20 years of Republican power, at least.I don't know how the USA ever gets back from this because there are so many guns in circulation let alone no political will to address it on the horizon. The difference between the USA and every other country in the developed world is the number of dead children that will make people think for a moment and say, "Nope, we actually don't need our guns that much"...in that every other country has a number, USA does not.
They'd only need 1 and 2 numbers to gang on it as far as I xan see.S56035 said:They need one of those "X Day's since last mass shooting" signs at the borders!
45 years old, and could have been written yesterday.
There is nothing to say, nothing to write, that hasn't been said or written a thousand times over before. Nothing will change in America because America does not want change - or at least the movers and shakers do not want change.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed".
As long as the Second Amendment of the Constitution (Bill of Rights) exists in its original wording it will be interpreted in many different ways to suit different agendas, and as long as there are 50 States with their own different laws concerning the ownership and carrying of guns, nothing can and will change in The United States of America. You just have to look at the notes, interpretations, matters for debate, and teaching media concerning The Second Amendment on the National Constitution Center's website to realise how it has, can and will be interpreted and misinterpreted.
Compare this to the page on the website of The National Rifle Association - Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) that contains THEIR interpretation of the Second Amendment:
They even drag the Fourth Amendment into it to reinforce their contention that the Second Amendment is all about individual people protecting themselves and their homes with guns.
The American War of Independence was from 1775 to 1783. The Second Amendment was ratified in 1791 not long after this. It clearly relates to the rights of people collectively as an organised militia to carry firearms and weapons in order to fight against an oppressive regime. A lot of people seem to think it relates to the American Civil War, but that almost a century later.
Clearly when the Constitution was being debated and drafted they weren't forecasting how this same constitutional right might relate to people in successive centuries in much the same way that they never envisioned the need to clarify and get it in writing whether or not a complete fucking imbecile might one day be allowed to become the president. I suppose that particular lack of vision regarding "qualifications" for presidency went hand-in-hand with what later was seen as The Great American Dream where anybody could achieve anything if they worked hard enough.

In the NRA article it says this with regard to the "being necessary to the security of a free State" part of the Amendment:
"The Founding Fathers felt that citizens should be able to protect themselves against the government and any other threat to their wellbeing or personal freedom. The Second Amendment granted citizens that right - giving them the ability to defend themselves and their property.Though times have changed dramatically, the need for defenses afforded by the Second Amendment has remained much the same".
Yes times have changed, but the original "need" from when it was written is now somewhat different, however that's the staunch interpretation touted by the NRA that is such an influential body in America and many people will quote this verbatim. Nothing will change.
Arms in those days would have been defined as Pitch Forks and muskets. Not rapid fire 45s and ARs.
0 and 1, more likely. There’s more than one a day, on average - 488 so far in 2024, according to the BBC.Sporky said:They'd only need 1 and 2 numbers to gang on it as far as I xan see.
The only thing that’s at all unusual about this one - in common with the one Geldof wrote I Don’t Like Mondays about - is that out of the over 10,000 mass shootings in the US since then, only a tiny proportion have a female perpetrator.
I was watching Fox News coverage of this yesterday.
There wasn't even a token attempt to address how this could have been prevented.
Plenty of analysis about what the police would do now in terms of ascertaining a motive, etc, etc.
One commentator even said 'It was only a 9mm handgun that was used so it could have been much worse.'
Only 3 people dead, that's OK then.
It was nauseating.

America would rather arm children with guns to defend themselves than to remove them from adults.
But you cant buy a kinder egg in USA, because of the danger that the plastic toy presents....
Somewhere along the line, something went very wrong.

They were also the biggest producer in video porn at one time yet still had very tight censorship on what was shown on TV and in cinemas.
1.4 million firearms a month in 2024, plus all the adjacent stuff (ranges, accessories, healthcare for wounded, NRA stuff, gun related media, social aspect (clubs and stuff) etc etc).
No way would Kinder Eggs be a rival to that, but if they were, I'm doubtful they'd be banned. If they really are? Seems a fairly arbitrary thing to ban!

Obviously we all despair at their stubbornness on the issue.
We call all imagine the fallout where a state imposed a ban, and someone (who people will speculate is a supporter of the NRA but it is never proven categorically) kills half a dozen people with a knife or machete. Quite depressing, really.
There are, without doubt, political analysts who have crunched the numbers, and we are not yet above the threshold for significant change to this regulation. The general US population need to be in support of a change of any significance, and for that to happen there needs to be outrage. Americans have become more accepting and less outraged at this situation over time. Another Columbine today wouldn't shock in the same way. It's really quite scary to think how high those numbers would have to be.

Yes, Kinder Eggs are banned in the US, because of the danger small plastic toys pose to children.MaximumZargon said:
